Last Friday I spent a very hectic, yet powerful hour with young First Nation Years 7 & 8 students from schools across the Coffs Coast for the Coffs AIME Mentoring Program Day. AIME is an amazing not-for-profit organisation that strives to “Unlock the imagination of the human race to forge unlikely connections that lead to a different set of outcomes, a different world, a fairer world”.

My ukuleles were one of the activities in the ‘Failure Time’ sessions, where groups would move from station to station trying out new things! I had each group for around 10 minutes and we managed to belt out a song every session! In some sessions we even cracked a second song.

I’ve done conferences and events before where I usually have at least half an hour to teach the ukulele basics, and usually to adults, so it was such a treat to to play with young people and to see how quickly they pick it up. It’s also really interesting mixing up learning styles eg having handouts V matching finger shapes to learn chords.

The ukulele is a great tool for conferences – for breakout sessions, ice-breakers and loosening people up – and a great team-building exercise. PLUS it’s tons of fun. So if you have a business or are running events and are in need of a ‘change-of-brain’ session, please contact me on 0421 346 713 or stephanie@ukoono.com.au.
